Thank you, Graham,

PEN & INK, KILTIMAGH -
PRACTICES AND GUIDELINES
1. Pen & Ink is a working writing
group designed to help encourage, improve and
maintain the writing skills of local
creative writers.
2. Meetings and occasional workshops
are normally held in the Kiltimagh area on two
evenings per month. A small fee is paid by each
individual attending to help cover expenses such as
rent of the venue. The quorum for ordinary meetings
and workshops will be three. Meetings usually last
for one and a half to two hours. The Chairperson
normally chairs a meeting or, in absentia, appoints
some other member to take her/his place.
3. Although meetings and workshops are
intended for adults (18 years and over), young
people aged 16 and above are welcome providing they
have the permission of a parent or guardian to
attend. Parents and guardians should be aware
that topics of an adult nature may occasionally
be presented to the group for critique.
4. Writers are expected to read aloud
excerpts from writing they are currently working on. Such
readings are then subject to comment and critique by
the remainder of the group. Writers
should be aware that there is a maximum
time-limit of ten minutes for oral
contributions. Writers who feel they may require
more time should provide copies of their work
via email prior to a meeting, or by hard copy on
the night
5. It is expected that each reading or
presentation of work is followed by discussion and
comments by the group. The objective must always be
one of mutual support and respect for the work of
others. Suggestions are offered with the clear
understanding that the writer ultimately decides
what will work in his or her piece.
6. As a writing group, we recognise
that difficult or painful memories can often be
artistically expressed through writing. It is the
responsibility of each member to safeguard their own
well-being and either absent themselves for the
duration of any reading and/or speak to the
Director. No member should at any time feel isolated
or aggrieved or unable to voice an opinion.
7. The Chairperson (or his/her nominee)
monitors the dynamic of the group; his or her
decision is final on the night. We agree that if a
conflict arises amongst members it will be managed
[a] with honest self-examination and one-to-one
communication as the first option, or otherwise [b]
should be arbitrated by the Chairperson (or his/her
nominee). Further, [c] We agree that any member
aggrieved by a decision of the Chairperson (or
his/her nominee)
will have the right to have his/hergrievance
heard and adjudicated at a separate full group
business meeting as a last resort. Complaints must
be presented to the Secretary in writing by the
complainant prior to such a full-group business
meeting.
8. An annual membership subscription is
charged for each calendar year. The current fee is €
2. The Secretary shall maintain membership records.
9. An Annual General Meeting or
full-group business meeting shall have the power to
revoke, vary or expand on any or all of the above
principles and guidelines. A quorum of at least 5
members shall constitute a valid AGM or full-group
business meeting. And such meeting shall have the
power to elect or dismiss the following officer
holders: Director, Secretary and Treasurer. Office
holders will normally be elected on an annual
calendar basis.
